Chancellor Martin’s Commitment to being “In St. Louis, For St. Louis”

St. Louis stands at a crossroads between what the region has been and what we can become.

At Washington University in St. Louis, we’re proud of our global reach as an educational and research institution.  But we are equally proud to be a leader in our hometown of St. Louis.  We are who we are because of where we are.

As we look to the future, we will strengthen our partnerships within our community to forge a new way forward, by leveraging our strengths in research, education and patient care to better serve the needs of our neighbors, and by listening to, learning from, and collaborating with local institutions to improve the quality of life for all people in the St. Louis region.

With our emphasis in St. Louis initiatives, we aim to create, maintain, and strengthen partnerships within our community.  We invite you to join our efforts, whether by exploring the strategic networks that WashU has already developed, or by building new bridges between your organization and ours.

Lisa Weingarth

Lisa Weingarth

Senior Advisor for St. Louis Initiatives

In her capacity as Senior Advisor for St. Louis Initiatives, Lisa Weingarth plays a pivotal role, overseeing both the St. Louis Initiatives team and the university-wide effort to fulfill Chancellor Martin’s commitment to the St. Louis community. Lisa serves as the Chancellor’s primary liaison between Washington University and community leaders and institutions within the St. Louis metropolitan area. The team’s work both on and off campus helps the university coordinate its time and resources to maximize the impact of its programs and activities – and to ensure that the university’s efforts align not only with its own goals but also with the needs and vision of the greater community.

The St. Louis Initiatives team nurtures the university’s relationships with both internal and external partners; guides the university’s efforts to prioritize its areas of focus; and helps to establish measurable, meaningful goals to demonstrate progress. This work is informed by the Chancellor-appointed In St. Louis, For St. Louis Advisory Group and the In St. Louis, For St. Louis Board of Trustees Taskforce.

Nominate an outstanding Washington University staff and faculty for a local or regional honor! Once you submit a nominee, a member from the St. Louis Initiatives team will contact you for more information on the staff and/or faculty member. You can also include any supporting information within this form. This form is monitored year-round for ongoing opportunities.

St. Louis Initiatives Inventory

Washington University touches lives throughout the St. Louis region in a variety of ways: through our medical centers; through our educational activities; through our research programs; through our operational choices, and even through our role as the region’s second-largest employer.

The St. Louis Initiatives Inventory, which WashU compiled over the summer of 2023, allows the University to better catalog, track, and share our current projects.  Through the inventory, WashU can communicate its priorities and projects, share best practices among similar programs, and strengthen coalitions between the University and our community partners.  In turn, the inventory can inspire further strategic collaborations with local community groups, schools, governments, and other regional institutions that work for the betterment of the St. Louis region.

If you are a WashU staff or faculty member, and you would like to add your initiative to the inventory, please use the following form.*

*Please note that the St. Louis Initiatives Inventory does not include community-engaged faculty research. Initiatives must have a current website to be included in the inventory.

In St. Louis, For St. Louis Advisory Group

The In St. Louis, For St. Louis Advisory Group serves as a Chancellor-appointed, campus-wide advisory body dedicated to fostering a culture of information sharing, cultivating opportunities for connection and collaboration, and providing continuous feedback and support to university leadership in the development and implementation of the university’s In St. Louis, For St. Louis Initiative.
